Match
Report as conveyed by Barry Needham
Lost toss; they put us in. We didn't have any openers to go in with
Ali so Gary Kendrick volunteered. In the third over he attempted a
hook, missed, got hit just below the eye. Within minutes his shirt
was completely red ( I didn't have a camera), retired hurt, went to
hospital, returned later with confirmation of cracked cheekbone and
completely closed eye. Went from bad to worse when André was
run out from slip for nil. Then Alistair and Simon steadied the ship
with a 50 partnership til Ali got out for 21. Barry Needham joined
Simon before Simon was bowled for 52, (his first fifty, with ten fours).
Smart joined Needham who after a scratchy start made 36 with 7 boundaries
- curiously 35 of Needham's runs were scored between midwicket and
backward square leg. Smart was equally scratchy to begin with (dropped
second ball) but shared a 70 partnership with Needham for the fifth
wicket. Keith eventually out for 35 ( 5 x 4). Then some late contributions
allowed Barry to declare at 195 for 9.
South Woodford started badly as Smart bowled an opener for a duck
in the second over. However a fine half century from the other opener
and a big second wicket partnership set up a victory for Saarrf Woodford.
Si Warren broke through with the aid of a stunning catch from Tom
Bloor and Ken Leon added a further two quick wickets. However the
South then brought in two South Africans who batted baseball style
(thats not cricket), runs came quickly and the Saarf won by 5 wickets.
Man-of-the-match: Si Warren with 52.
Historical note:
In dismissing the SW No. 6, Steve Moore took his 350th wicket for
the Horizontals.
